The DCJS 14I – Instructor Liability online training course is designed to provide firearm instructors with crucial knowledge about managing legal risks associated with their role. This course covers essential concepts to help instructors understand their liability and take proactive measures to prevent legal issues.

- Identify two types of torts relevant to firearm instruction.
- Recognize five areas of negligent liability.
- List five preventative measures instructors can use to avoid negligent liability.

In today’s litigious environment, firearm instructors must not only ensure their personal safety but also navigate the potential for legal action against them. Instructors may face personal liability for criminal actions and civil lawsuits for damages caused to plaintiffs. Additionally, they could be held accountable for their students’ actions off the range.
This course focuses on understanding the “reasonable man” standard and emphasizes the importance of maintaining comprehensive training records. Participants will learn to implement appropriate training procedures, including documented lesson plans, regular testing, and thorough evaluations to safeguard against liability issues.
